Wonders of the Ancient and Natural Worlds

Though Cancun may be known as Mexico’s party capital, this popular travel destination is also your gateway to the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula. Head inland to the lost Mayan city of Chichén Itzá. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is considered one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Learn about pre-Hispanic Mexico and the Mayan culture as you explore pyramids, ancient ball courts, temples, and sacred cenotes (large underground pools). This Mexico activity is perfect for the history buffs.

However, near Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun, lies a rich, sprawling underground world. Rio Secreto, Mexico’s “newest” cenote, was re-discovered in 2004 and has been open to tourism since 2007. Over twelve kilometers of this semi-sunken cave system is available to explore with experienced guides. No expert spelunking or cave diving experience is needed. Simply walk, float, or bike through this magical underworld.

The Magic Towns of Mexico

Pueblos Mágicos (Magic Towns) is an official designation from the Mexican government awarded to towns and communities that have preserved their cultural traditions, architecture, and overall history. These towns make lovely day trips to explore Mexico’s local art and beauty.

From Puerto Vallarta, travel into the mountains to San Sebastian Del Oeste. This old mining town still operates and produces beautiful gold, silver, opal, and obsidian jewels. Wander the bougainvillea draped streets, visit an artisanal tequila gallery, organic coffee factory, and more. For beach lovers, try the Sayulita tour activity. This bohemian-chic town offers the best waves for surfers of all levels and streets full of art boutiques and tasty seafood restaurants. Depending on the time of the year, you may even see humpback whales from the coastline.

Cancun also has several Magic Towns you can visit. With its beautiful beaches and Mayan ruins, Tulum is probably the most famous one. Or, take a sailing tour to Isla Mujeres for a more luxurious Mexico activity and visit the sea turtle preserve. Did you know there’s also an old pirate town nearby? Learn about pirate history and folklore on a tour to Bacalar and stop and take in the natural beauty of the Lagoon of Seven Colors.

Then from Los Cabos, visit Todos Santos. This magical town, lined with historic colonial architecture, is home to old sugar factories and current artisanal galleries. Try regional candies and tequila, of course. And for the music fans, visit the iconic Hotel California, forever immortalized by that classic Eagles song of the same name.

Off The Beaten Track

Or maybe you want to do something a little more active to get your blood pumping. Every region has zipline tours to soar over valleys and jungles. However, each location also offers experiences unique to their character. Go horseback riding and ATV-ing at Los Cabos’ Migriño Beach. Or do one of the several outdoor activities in the nearby adventure park Tierra Sagrada. Mountain biking, off-road ATV adventures, and camels in Mexico? Why not! The desert climate of Baja California is perfect for a Mexican camel safari.

Looking for a unique, once-in-a-lifetime ATV experience? Dare to try Puerto Vallarta’s Jorullo Bridge ATV Tour. Over 470 meters long and hanging 150 meters above the river below, Jorullo Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world for vehicles. Perfect for taking in the beautiful panoramic view after speeding through the jungle.

While Cancun also has several ATV tours, underwater adventures reign supreme in this region. The Mayan Adventure activity takes you on a snorkel experience through the marine park of Yal Ku. Explore three unique ecosystems from the salty ocean inlet to the freshwaters of the nearby cenotes. Off the coast of Playa del Carmen is the island of Cozumel. The largest island in the Mexican Caribbean is home to some of the best diving and snorkeling in the world, beautiful botanical gardens, crocodile exhibits, and playful sea lions living their best lives.

Fun For Everyone

But the best activities, especially Mexico activities, are the fun ones. The ones you can enjoy with the whole family, and the ones where you can laugh and dance the night away. Puerto Vallarta is home to some of the best evening entertainment shows in the world. Sail across the Banderas Bay and into the world of the Aztecs with Rhythms of the Night. This dinner show explores the fantastical origins of the Aztecs through astounding acrobatics and theatrics. Or let your inner pirate loose with the Dinner Under the Sea dinner cruise. Eat, drink, and enjoy a night of swashbuckling good fun and games.

Like amusement parks? Check out the Xcaret Park system near Cancun. Part theme park and part nature preserve, there’s an experience for everyone here. Snorkel through underground rivers, slide down waterslides, and zipline into the water. Explore aquariums, animal sanctuaries, and botanical gardens. Challenge your senses and imagination in fun optical illusion scenarios. And of course, there are plenty of shows that’ll dazzle and entertain.
