Destination Spotlight: Los Cabos, Mexico *UPDATE AFTER ODILE*

Hurricane Odile swept through Cabo in September 2014, but in just a few short months, Cabo has been restored. Some 90 percent of Los Cabos’ restaurants, several popular golf courses and more than 6,000 of Los Cabos’ 16,000 hotel rooms are open, with that number expected to rise to 10,000 in December, according to Delta Vacations spokesman Albert Snedeker. It’s an amazing turnaround, and much of Los Cabos hotels have been improved and remodeled following the storm. It’s got us thinking about Los Cabos as a destination and how we can help bring people back to this incredibly beautiful and cultural area of Mexico.

Los Cabos is a unique dual destination. This location retains the rustic qualities of a relaxed Mexican town in both architecture and quaint intimacy, while Cabo San Lucas is a vibrant city by the water that thrives as a party destination. Either site attracts both tourists and locals to take part in a pure culture free of many influences that keep it from being a tourist trap and allowing it to be embraced as a destination. However, with such close proximity to the US, Los Cabos is modernized with all the comforts and developments of a Western nation while keeping to the calm and nature of a tropical island. This provides amenities that both relax and entertain in unique ways that could only be found here.

1) Exquisite Cuisine:

By keeping to the aesthetic qualities of a Mexican town embracing its Spanish influences, there’s no shortage of small restaurants lining cobblestone streets. There,  cuisine is artfully prepared with locally grown ingredients and fresh game from nearby waters. With crab and clam consumed by the water, there is a serene set orchestrated here that seems a slice paradise. Where else could you find this?

While being a coastal community, it’s logical to assume that there would be a love of seafood, but there are also delicacies served here that you can’t find anywhere else. While chocolate clams can be found in areas around this part of the world, many would be hard-pressed to find a smoked marlin tostada or try crushed stingray. And these aren’t prepared by inexperienced hands; the relationship to food is a close one between preparer and customer. For anyone who adventures with their taste buds, this is an invitation to feast every day of their visit.

2) Natural Sights:

From spring to autumn, the skies above Los Cabos, free of the light pollution one might find in a major city, provides a clear backdrop for stars and the moon viewable in the way nature had intended. In the Sea of Cortez, you snorkel and dive with gorgeous sea life. If your idea of natural relaxation is more laid-back, sports fishing awaits in Cabo, where you can catch mackerel and shark. But if adrenaline and exploration call you, why not climb into an ATV and explore El Gallito, the desert dunes just a mile away?

3) A Commitment to Art:

History is central to Los Cabos, and that is evident in the lovingly-preserved plaza of San Jose del Cabo where art is appreciated and presented to enthusiasts and passersby. Between the months of November and June, Thursday nights host the Art Walk event. This is when the Alvaro Obregon area opens its studios and galleries for guests to browse and purchase pieces while enjoying food and drink. While the event is organized to showcase paintings, sculptures, and handicrafts, it is so engaging that it calls out artists of all disciplines to engage and perform, contributing to this communal atmosphere

4) Spas for Relaxation:

Fiesta Americana Grand Los Cabos Hotel is a perfect combination of luxury and home comfort for tourists. With the exertion of enjoying what nature has to offer those visiting the region, the hours spent walking down historic streets, the need for physical relaxation sets in and most may want to pay a visit to Somma Winespa. Like most spas, there you’d find all the amenities for comfort and restoration. For those looking for a more holistic approach, one that incorporates a spiritual element, they find more comfort in the pre-hispanic baths of the Aquazul Holistic spa.

There is a true commitment to providing spa rituals based on Greek and Roman practices. Those who want to travel off the beaten path can find themselves in the Villa del Arco Hotel and head to the Desert Spa to experience an authentic Mexican hacienda with traditional oils and products.

While there are many destinations in and around Mexico  that embrace Spanish influences with pride and provide a glimpse into the past, few areas do with the grace and pride of Los Cabos. It is both a way to step into the past and to another world.
